Cosmo's Visionaries and Rebels Selection

Cosmo's Visionaries and Rebels Selection

This is a recording of a live DJ set from Cosmo as the support opening act for Beardyman's new project, "Beardyman's Freestyle Orchestra" at the Brixton Electric in December 2011. Beardyman asked her to support because of her knowledge of the sonics of music and recordings and her selection was all from vinyl except for one song (maybe you can guess what it is?). She selected music that not only sounded good, but that exhibited elements of musical vision - much like Beardyman, himself. From Carl Craig to Captain Beefheart, Shackleton to Roland Kirk and I-Cube to Funkadelic, this is surely a mix unlike any other. So here it is - a toast to musical pioneers courtesy of Cosmo.
samurai.fm presents Rude Audio

samurai.fm presents Rude Audio

Rude Audio are a South London based collective of vocalists, musicians, producers and engineers. Their debut album 'That Dirty Echo' sees the group exploring new sounds that transcend electronic and dance genres.

Over the past three years, members of Rude Audio have been releasing music under the moniker Unusual & Electric, garnering attention and praise from prominent DJs in British music and overseas. Championed by the likes of BBC radio DJs Nemone, Rob Da Bank and Gideon Coe, Rude Audio have seen their past musical endeavours played nationwide on stations such as Radio 1 and supported by DJs such as Laurent Garnier. They've also received praise from the likes of DJ, Drowned in Sound and Clash who went on to emphasise that one of their songs "...foams over with more ideas than most albums".

A mixture of individuals from both Newcastle and London, Rude Audio describe themselves as being rooted in the back streets of London, which is apparent in their unique fusion and approach to music. The album frequently touches on a Balearic tip with bright, 90's nostalgia while being anchored by the clean, bass-heavy elements of Dubstep and Techno. The group's mantra of 'rude' music is apparent in their unorthodox musical transitions and live instrumentation, yet the album remains loyal to its cause through hazy melodies and trippy adlibs.

Rude Audio's broad musical inspiration stems from its members' presence within the underground scene. Through regular work as engineers for other electronic acts and organising parties and raves, Rude Audio have materialised over the years to become an elusive presence within Electronic music. Progressing from such experiences, the collective now aim to re-introduce themselves having enlisted a collection of new and "old school" digital and analogue electronic equipment for a more sophisticated take on their unique sound. 'That Dirty Echo' may be the refined package of the Rude Audio sound, however the album's bold showcase of various underground styles maintains it does not lose its originality.

samurai.fm presents Ink Project

Ink Project consist of Melanie Dymond on vocals/production and Jez Lloyd on keys and production. Latest AA single 'Rewind Forward Reply' is a precursor to their full album, set for release later this year.

Their new single 'Rewind Forward Replay' is a futuristic take on electronic soul. Adopting elements of dubstep, broken beat and garage with influences of artists such as Four Tet, Mount Kimbie and Bonobo, Melanie's introspective lyrics contrast with her sultry vocal style.

The double A single is completed by 'Black Honey', a hypnotic, downtempo track. While it would be incorrect to mention "tr*p-h*p"; the spirit of MoWax and classic Bristol acts Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty and Tricky pervades throughout.

Ink Project released their debut single 'Call On Me' on eight:FX Records in June and have since had support from DJs including Gilles Peterson and MistaJam. Recent live summer gigs have included the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Jazz Refound Festival in Italy, Cargo and Notting Hill Arts Club in London.

Check this mix and please support Ink Project and buy their new single on Juno here http://goo.gl/mvw5f

Cyantific - Exclusive Mix

Cyantific - Exclusive Mix

Something very special for you this week in the form an exclusive alternative mix from D&B producer Cyantific.

With his new release on Ram Records, Cyantific shows why he’s been at the top of the D&B game for nearly a decade having made a name for himself as one of Hospital Records’ hottest producers and deadliest DJs.

This new mix for samurai shows a different side to the Cyantific sound and features the calypso rhythms of Jamie XX alongside house cuts from Julio Bashmore and Oliver $ and a healthy dose of Photek, Breakage and DJ Shadow for good measure.

We think this will be a mix you'll be playing again and again for some time to come.

samurai.fm presents Rough Fields

We are very pleased to bring you this glorious exclusive mix from Rough Fields. We think you will enjoy this one a lot!

Rough Fields is the operating name of James Birchall, an electro-acoustic composer, lofi/noise/folk artist and electronica producer from Manchester, UK. The sound brings together the disparate strands of his previous musical paths through folk, classical, rock, minimalism, electronica, electro-acoustic and experimental composition.

After three years spent absorbed in the acid techno scene in Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham and London in the mid-nineties, James moved to Huddersfield to study modern composition under Matthew Adkins, Christopher Fox, Michael Clark and other influential figures - a period which also brought him into contact with such luminaries as Steve Reich and Brian Eno. It was during this period that his first productions surfaced on the now defunct Bristol imprint Beat(en) Communications. Returning to Manchester in 2002, Birchall took a position in Salford University's music technology department and continued working on electronic music.

After spending a number of years in Paris composing and performing, James returned to the UK and founded the Bomb Shop label, releasing experimental electronica, house and dubstep under various names (Elias Linn, YTAC, Los Vampiros Lesbos, Sous Section 5, Jingai).

Flirt FM Presents Feed Me Weird Things - Steve 90210 Sanders Edition 15th Feb '12

Steve Sanders, played by Ian Ziering, is a character introduced in the first series of the Beverly Hills, 90210 continuity. Steve also made brief guest appearances in early episodes of Melrose Place. Originally a laid-back goofball who didn't mind taking shortcuts to get ahead, Steve matured throughout the series into a more responsibly minded individual. In the process, he retained a good deal of his trademark sense of humor.

This week's show is a tribute to the great Steve Sanders. It features new Burial, Persian psych funk, Irish electronica and post-rock, Scandinavian electro-jazz, modern kosmische, The 2 Bears' positivity and a special guest mix by the wonderful SUPPORTgr0up

This week’s show comes to you direct from the deep, deep heart of my stylus. Yes baby, its vinyl, all the way down for a shellacing you will never forget. Put simply, I have brought together some of the cool Aussie stuff I found not in the Great Southern Land, but in crates and boxes all around the world. Some of it rare, some of it ain’t, but all of it is rocking.

Let’s start with Brisbane’s Ups and Downs where I found their ‘In the Shadows’ single in a Rockabilly shop in Paris, sitting Right next to Ratcat’s ‘Baby’s got a gun’. The common thread, they were best released on one of Sydney’s best label, the mighty Waterfront. Two bands with very similar styles I think, firstly we have Mushroom Planet (released on the Hot label) featuring some ex-celibate rifles and then the Headstones, ex of Brisbane located in the great south of Sydney with ‘You got love’. Both were found in a cool shop in Cologne, Germany along with the first Mark of Cain single. Onto Baltimore, Maryland where a little punk shop disgorged this B-side from the Beasts, which was a Sour Mash outtake, followed by the Sub Pop singles version of Meating my head by Lubricated Goat. We rap this German trio up with a New Christs 7”. Onto an odd single, no connection, just like the song, with the Mavis’s getting a bit Kraut rocky with ‘Moon Drone Gold’. Actually speaking of Kraut rock, Hunters and Collectors who had previously recorded with Conny Plank from Cluster, treat us to the full seven minutes of ‘Talking to a Stranger’ followed up by the madness of Jim Thirlwell and ‘You’ve got foetus on your breath’. Two lovely tracks I think, one is the cover of the Beatles ‘Within You, Without You’ by the Triffids, backed onto fellow ex-pats, the Moodists, featuring the vocals of one D.McComb doing Justice and Money too. Featured on the same track is former bad seed Mick Harvey, with the next track featuring both Dave Graney and bad seed Conway Savage. We wrap the show up with Steve Kilbey off ‘Unearthed’ doing ‘out of this world’ (found in Seattle) and the Church roaring through Reptile found in Amsterdam. There you have it, a show within a show. Lots of vinyl, some really rare stuff and another cracking red hot go at Aussie music. Love it.
