Exile feat. Rashaan @ Dour 2010

Exile feat. Rashaan @ Dour 2010

Exile was without the expected Fashawn but MC Rashaan from the Crown City Rockers made a special appearance. Exile laid down an eclectic backing track, pushing the envelopes of hip-hop far into glitch and back again, always maintaining a sense of funk and groove in the mix. Rashaan rode the beats with his smooth lyrics creating a tidy blend of old and new school.

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip live @ Dour 2010

Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip live @ Dour 2010

Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip were the British revelation of Dour 2010. They achieved repute with the single 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' in 2008, a very right-on, humorous look at modern pop culture, followed by a debut album 'Angles' the same year. Their latest album is called 'The Logic of Chance'.

With Dan Le Sac on the one side setting the tempo and Scroobius Pip adding his ironic wordplay and philosophy to the mix, the duo represent the activation of a new generation of Brits.

Originally the International Turntablist Federation (ITF), IDA continues the independent tradition started by ITF to explore the potentials of turntablism outside of established competitions. IDA Italy is the longest standing chapter of the federation and in recent years has continued to push new directions by introducing beat battles and more to its shows.
This isn't just another DJ battle, it's a showcase of new talents and new possibilities featuring DJs, beatmakers and live shows.

Straight Goods Afrika Bambaataa Special

Straight Goods Afrika Bambaataa Special

During this spring tour, Afrika Bambaataa stopped by Vancouver BC and sat down with Straight Goods Radio hosts Jay & Flipout to talk about Hip Hop. What would Hip Hop be without Afrika Bambaataa, one third of the holy trinity of the culture alongside Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc? Bam with the Zulu Nation is the most influential and important organization in Hip Hop culture. Bambaataa spoke with the ease and the confidence of a tribal figure head that he is and declared that in 2010, Hip Hop is alive. I highly suggest you have a pen and pad by your side as you listen because he gives a musical history lesson from a primary source point of view. To put it simply, he was there in the beginning. I'm talking about the very beginning, when Hip Hop was born. He's the Godfather of Hip Hop, Afrika Bambaataa.

Rock it don't stop!

Sweat X live @ Club Transmediale 2009

Sweat X live @ Club Transmediale 2009

Sweat.X is the duo of MC Spoek Mathambo (Nthato Mokgata) and Markus Wormstorm (Markus Smit) from South Africa, with releases on the UK's Citinite and Try Harder labels, as well as a full-length slated for Flamin Hotz. Mokgata has been writing songs since he was ten and initially made a name for himself through collaborations with MC heavy weight Watkin Tudor Jones JR (Max Normal). Since then he has established himself as an independent force on the South African hip-hop rap scene. Smit is an Afrikaner born in Pretoria, classically trained with a number of electro projects including The Real Estate Agents.

Though they began in Soweto, Sweat.X offer something radically different to the massively popular kwaito - mid-tempo, blingy house - that is usually associated with the area. Fusing Afro-electro dance with new world funk, electro-breaks and rapping, old school hippity-hop and hyper style and retro-future fashion, 'African Coochie Pop', and 'Black Sweat' are the genres they've coined for their brand of 'patois-littered electrorap'. Since their first EP Ebonyivorytron (Citinite) was released at the end of 2007, young designers from Capetown and beyond styled Sweat.X's afrofuturist vision where tailored neon and complicated robot outfits mesh with hyper-bling and X-rated electro-booty beat funk.

Maybe not our usual thing, but I`m posting this because of the recent passing of Shem McCauley, DJ Streetsahead. Shem was big influence on me back when I would spend my time taping LWR shows, saving my money from working at Safeway to buy Imports from Soho`s Groove records, and my Saturdays breaking in Charing Cross Tube station. Hearing Shem cut-up Visage`s “Pleasure Boys” at Spatz blew my mind. It still does blow my mind. Sound quality of this is rough, but I wanted to do something in tribute. RIP Shem.

* I also have a 30 minute tape of Shem live at Spatz, with the aforementioned “Pleasure Boys”. The sound quality is even worse, but if there is interest I will also post that.

WhatYouWant Radioshow #41

  • Hip-Hop
  • Classic
  • Funk
  • 2h 02m
The first WhatYouWant Radioshow of the year and I'm hoping you'll agree it's a corker. First up, tons of stuff you may have missed from the end of 2011 including the snorter of a single off of the Canyons LP on Modular People, beats from Letherette and Ho Tep, the best James Blake song of last year, something great from Small Black (thanks Aaron!) plus a capsizing-ship-themed tune off of Undun, the Roots album that snuck out at the end of the year. Almost topical!

Also worth looking out for is a track off the absolutely excellent and FREE download by Jonti, available through Stones Throw - simply no excuse to get this brilliant album as a new year present to yourself.

But it's not all new stuff, or even all digital. Vinyl makes a comeback in this show too, with some selections from tunes picked up in New York in November. Aretha's sister Carolyn sings 'I Don't Want to Lose You' from the all round excellent LP 'Baby Dynamite' - every tune a winner from '69. Also in the mix is a Soul Searchers track from '72 but the real deal comes from a special mini-mix of Hi-Phat tunes on the famed Wild Pitch label out of New York - home of such Golden Age hip hop as Main Source, Ultramagnetic MC, Chill Rob G and O.C., amongst others. Pure golden wonder for your ears…

What else? Kate Bush, The Park, Driver Drive Faster - they're all in, and then we have a slept on track by Lack of Afro and an instrumental off of the 40th anniversary edition of Marvin's 'What's Going On' LP - a tasty Christmas present if ever there was one.

There's house, oh yes, with a couple of tracks off a great new 12" on House of Disco, Julio Bashmore from the end of last year, Dean Sunshine Smith goes uplifting once more PLUS Todd Terje getting all jiggy with the Arp2600 on the superbly named 'Inspector Norse'. That Todd!

Finally, I believe there are only a handful of people on the planet who were given a Julio Iglesias LP on vinyl this Christmas, but I am one of them. WYWRadio leaves you with the sounds of 'La Mer', a close of the night tune that makes you want to party like it's 1980 round Julio's house. Nice.

NOTE: Like a track? Head over to the brand new www.wywradio.com to see the tracklisting - all of the tracks played are are linked to online sales options - support your artists!
