Los Campesinos live @ Dour 2010

Los Campesinos live @ Dour 2010

Los Campesinos! formed at Cardiff University in 2006, quickly signing to Wichita and releasing their first album 'Hold On Now, Youngster…' in 2008, a blend of post-rock with thick arrangements and multiple layers of vocals, largely due to there being seven of them in the band. This album was quickly followed by two more albums. With clever turns of phrase, storytelling and a sense for theatrical, emotive backings, Los Campesinos! are at the front of the new indie-rock movement, sweeping the crowd up in their grandiose, intricate songs.

Shining live @ Dour 2010

Earplugs in, the initial shockwave from the wall of sound settled into a rich tapestry of jazz disguised by black metal. An unexpected surprise in the genre that, while not instantly accessible to all, will reveal a new concept in modern electronic-acoustic music. Since their debut on a small Norwegian acoustic jazz label in 2001, Shining has moved on to become one of the most hard-hitting, genre-pushing bands of our generation.

samurai.fm presents Dachambo

Dachambo is a psychedelic and alternative band with six members featuring twin drums and Didgeridoo. They are currently a very successful drawing attention from all areas as an upcoming artist in the Japanese jam bands scene.

Dachambo handle their music management themselves and perform at many of the outdoor festivals in Japan such as Nagisa and Sunset Live in Fukuoka. One of the most important festivals that they played recently is Asia's biggest, the Fuji Rock Festival.

They love and appreciate all types of world and international music, which have been greatly influencing their music style. The floating digital sounds, the roar of Didgeridoo, and the deep bass with a dancing guitar… They continue pursuing the possibilities of sounds through jam, tribal, latin, organic, funk, and many other genres of music.

They are especially good at blending diverse sounds into alternative dance music. They make you realize there is no boundary in the music world once you experience their phenomenal live performance.

Marketing Music presents It's A Fine Line - Leftfield Mix

Few years ago London based Parisian producers Ivan Smagghe (ex-Black Strobe) and Tim Paris (head of Marketing Music) joined their creative forces for their project It's A Fine Line. For those familiar with Smagghe's electro/techno background and Paris' melodic house solo work, IAFL sound may come as a little surprise, featuring their broad influences from jazz, classic Krautrock, Italo/space disco, rockabilly, psychedelia, industrial… anything. This dark, moody and organic production is almost defining a new genre and causing a huge excitement in the scene, attracting remix work for Burger & Voigt, Tiga, Luca Baldini or Au Revoir Simone, and appearances at major festivals and clubs around the world including Fabric London, Rex Paris, Lux Lisbon, Robert Johnson, NAME Festival and Goa in Madrid.

Now the duo have finally found time to work on their own release to outlet their creativity - 'It’s A Fine Line EP' is released on May 19th from Marketing Music. And to celebrate this release, here's an extremely unique mix which welcomes you into the extremely unique world of It's A Fine Line - Enjoy!

Rebel Butterfly presents Time And Space Machine

Rebel Butterfly presents Time And Space Machine

Richard Norris's journey into psych began as a teenager when he worked for the legendary UK psych label Bam Caruso, who released dozens of psychedelic and freakbeat compilations alongside artist albums from the Seeds, the Left Banke, the Walker Brothers, John's Children, July and many more. "It was like attending psychedelic university," says Richard.

His first full-length album, 1987’s  'Jack The Tab', was co-produced by Genesis P-Orridge and was one of the first UK acid house albums. The accent was on acid rather than house however – samples from Tiny Tim, 'The Trip' and many other sixties cut-ups abound, alongside Peter Fonda's "We want to get Loaded… We want to have a good time", a full year before Primal Scream.

The spirit of 'Jack the Tab' is all over Richard's re-edit12" mini albums as Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve, produced twenty years after his 1987 debut, in partnership with Erol Alkan. BTWS have gone on to remix the Chemical Brothers, Goldfrapp, Franz Ferdinand and more.

And now as The Time And Space Machine, Richard presents 'Set Phazer To Stun,' released April on Tirk.

Wide Open Road 2012 Show 2

This week’s show comes to you direct from the deep, deep heart of my stylus. Yes baby, its vinyl, all the way down for a shellacing you will never forget. Put simply, I have brought together some of the cool Aussie stuff I found not in the Great Southern Land, but in crates and boxes all around the world. Some of it rare, some of it ain’t, but all of it is rocking.

Let’s start with Brisbane’s Ups and Downs where I found their ‘In the Shadows’ single in a Rockabilly shop in Paris, sitting Right next to Ratcat’s ‘Baby’s got a gun’. The common thread, they were best released on one of Sydney’s best label, the mighty Waterfront. Two bands with very similar styles I think, firstly we have Mushroom Planet (released on the Hot label) featuring some ex-celibate rifles and then the Headstones, ex of Brisbane located in the great south of Sydney with ‘You got love’. Both were found in a cool shop in Cologne, Germany along with the first Mark of Cain single. Onto Baltimore, Maryland where a little punk shop disgorged this B-side from the Beasts, which was a Sour Mash outtake, followed by the Sub Pop singles version of Meating my head by Lubricated Goat. We rap this German trio up with a New Christs 7”. Onto an odd single, no connection, just like the song, with the Mavis’s getting a bit Kraut rocky with ‘Moon Drone Gold’. Actually speaking of Kraut rock, Hunters and Collectors who had previously recorded with Conny Plank from Cluster, treat us to the full seven minutes of ‘Talking to a Stranger’ followed up by the madness of Jim Thirlwell and ‘You’ve got foetus on your breath’. Two lovely tracks I think, one is the cover of the Beatles ‘Within You, Without You’ by the Triffids, backed onto fellow ex-pats, the Moodists, featuring the vocals of one D.McComb doing Justice and Money too. Featured on the same track is former bad seed Mick Harvey, with the next track featuring both Dave Graney and bad seed Conway Savage. We wrap the show up with Steve Kilbey off ‘Unearthed’ doing ‘out of this world’ (found in Seattle) and the Church roaring through Reptile found in Amsterdam. There you have it, a show within a show. Lots of vinyl, some really rare stuff and another cracking red hot go at Aussie music. Love it.

Feed Me Weird Things Presents 2011 Part 1

The first in a series of mixes to round up 2011. I don't know about you, but I'm a real nerd when it comes to the end of year best of lists, poring over them like a squinty and excitable mole. So I'm going to do a few mixes that gather together what impressed me in the musical year of 2011. This one is a bit of a hodgepodge, but it works in some bizarre way. More to come.

With scattered noises and rampant techno beats, Noise in the Ether is back, again scouring the globe and the decades for music that is fresh, little-known, exciting and powerful. Joseph brings his favourite tracks of 2011, from terrifying noise to elegant string drones via throbbing avant-electro and delicate piano ambience. Meanwhile, Chris brings more exploratory jazz and experimental wonders, before whisking us away to the psychedelic wilds of Japan, the mutated folk/calypso beaches of the Bahamas and the windswept deserts of Ethiopia. Tune in and float away into the weird and wonderful world of Noise in the Ether.
